Vaginal Yeast infection! Any home remedies/ over the counter medicines?

January 28th, 2010 by admin | Filed in Yeast Infection Treatments

OK, about a week back, i noticed some thick, creamy white discharge from my vagina. It did not have any odor or anything, but was a lot.
Then a few days back, i started my period and then on the 3rd day, it started to itch. I thought it was a rash and applied rash ointment around it. Not inside though! the itching reduced, but it is still there! What can i do? I have heard that applying yogurt helps. Is that true? any other remedy or over the counter medicine?

P.S: i became sexually active about a month back, so it could be an STD. But both me and my partner were virgins. Is it something serious? Should i speak to a gyno or will yogurt work?

It sounds like a simple thrush infection. This is a fungal infection and is very common.

Yes yoghurt is a very good natural remedy. Make sure its natural yoghurt. No added sugar or chemicals. Just natural yoghurt. Soak a tampon in the yoghurt and insert it for an hour or so. Then change it.

It works because natural yoghurt is the same pH level as the vagina. Your vagina likes natural yoghurt a lot! It may not be enough to clear up the infection, but it will certainly help.

See your nurse who will be able to advise what else to take. If it is thrush, canestan cream will be the cure.

    Good Luck x

No do not put yogurt in your vagina or around it. You can go to Walgreen’s or any other local store and you can buy medication for your yeast infection. There are several different brands.

You’re right, yoghurt is a well known fighter of yeast problems but I suggest you just talk to your doctor, just for your own peace of mind. Might as well start now since you are no longer a virgin.
Have your first pap test at the same time for safety reasons too.
    Good luck.

I hated using the yogurt–and I can’t say it worked for me. Personally, I thought only a man doctor would even think of suggesting yogurt in the vagina. Good Grief.

You can get Canasten over-the-counter. It can be either a cream, or a pessary (small suppository for inside the vagina) and a tablet. I use the combo one and it works.

At times even when you’re a virgin, diseases can be transmitted orally. Simply because of microscopic blood particles in your mouth.

Also, if you wear a lot of thongs, that can cause an infection due to the constant flossing back and forth from your anus to your vaginal opening. There can be a lot of bacteria transmitted from area to area. This can be a problem, so make sure to at least wear a more complete underwear, and make sure they’re cotton. Cotton allows for your private areas to receive air and reduce the probability of getting another yeast infection.

Other from that, make sure you see gynecologist just because they know what’s best, and to fully determine if it is a STD or hygiene/vaginal bacteria issue.

It would be very unlikely to be STD if you were both virgins but I would have that checked out. If it is a yeast infection you could try Caprylic Acid from the health food store. But if it is a real bad yeast infection you are better to go to the doctor and have it checked out.

No it can’t be STD but do check with doctor for examination.

Just ask a pharmacist for help and see what she/he can provide for you. But the best way to deal with that is pure dieting and thats it.

A yeast infection such as thrush is extremely common in females and can be brought on by antibiotics, tight clothing, stress, medications, illness, birth control pills.

There’s plenty of medications available over the counter from your pharmacy, Canesten is a good one, just one tablet and it clears but there’s also a ‘duo’ pack of the tablet and the cream to relieve the itchiness.

Yoghurt can work but it’s very messy.

If both of you were virgins there’s no chance of an STD.
