My Dog Has a Yeast Infection in Her Ear?

December 9th, 2009 by admin | Filed in Vaginal Yeast Infection

I noticed that she is scratching the ear again and the smell is from a yeast infection. She had one several years ago. She also has cancer and is incontinent. I will be calling the vet today and hopefully they will not ask me to bring her in as she has a hard time getting into the car without assistance. Shes a GH mix.
What med have worked best on your dog’s yeast infections and have any of you had luck with naturals remedies. I ask this because she is on medicine and really don’t want to add more. She’s and old girl of 13 and don’t wish to put her through anymore trauma. I even wondered if over the counter yeast medicine for vaginal yeast infection for women would work. Don’t worry, I won’t use it, but just curious as these meds do kill yeast. Thank you for any info.
To those who say I am irresponsible, better read this again. By the way, her cancer diagnosis and meds were over 00, pill foe incontinence are over a month. Her diapers are per month. She leads a good life. I feed her dog food mixed with boiled chicken so it is easier on her stomach and she likes it. So I would not say that I am cheap. I am trying to give her a quality life until the time comes which I am not looking forward to. She is a loving dog and a member of the family. Just want the least amount of trauma for her. Thank you for the caring and informative answers.

Ignore those idiots who were rude – I know what you’re saying – but as a vet tech it’s really best to use canine medication instead of human. They are made differently. Do you have a good rap ore with your veterinarian? Perhaps they will just give you a prescription without charging an office visit if they know how hard it is for your dog to get there. Yeast infections can turn into staph infections and then you’ll really have a problem on your hands – good luck.

Let her go. Hard but it is best, she has given you love and loyalty all these years, now its time to repay her. Good Luck.

in my opinion its far more traumatic and distressing for you old girl to have the ear infection than it ever would be for her to have some drops and medication prescribed by your vet.

The only trauma regarding a vet visit is to your wallet.

Take this poor suffering dog to the vet and take her in.
She needs to be examined and put on proper medication both for her ear infection and her incontinence.

Traumatic is having medical issues that no one bothers to resolve.

The very best for my dog’s yeast infections was always Tresaderm. There’s nothing "natural" (which I take to mean cheap and homemade?) that will cure the infection. Tresaderm is CHEAPER than buying an OTC product like miconazole, and it will work. Just call the vet and ask for something for the infection. If the dog has a history of yeast in the ears, the vet will probably prescribe without seeing the dog.

Chronic yeast infections can indicate an allergy, particular a food allergy. So you might want to readdress that foods that you are feeding your dog. Many commercial ear washes contain a mixture of rubbing alcohol and vinegar. Others are a combination of boric acid and vinegar. Both can be mixed and used at home to prevent yeast infections because the yeast cannot grow in an acidic environment. They can be used for maintenance of the healthy ear by being used once or twice weekly, after swimming and after bathing. Do not use these formulas if the ears are really irritated or if the ear drum is ruptured. It is very painful to do this. The vaginal yeast cremes work very well to kill yeast. Lamisal and other products made for killing jock itch and ringworm work well also as yeast is a fungus. Again these products should not be used if the ear drum is ruptured or if there is a lot of irritation in the ears. None of these products will work if the infection is caused from bacterial infection, if there is a tumor, or foreign body in the ear.
