My husband was just diagnosed with a yeast infection yesterday, and was prescribed three different meds, but only one was a cream.
When we got to the pharmacy we were looking for ways to cut the cost a little and we asked about getting an over-the-counter cream instead of the one prescribed. However the pharmacists did not recommend that, as the prescribed cream has active ingredients to ward off the yeast infection specifically.
So besides OTC creams being less effective, you also have to take into account that the yeast infection has most likely spread within your body, and you may not be able to use a cream everywhere. (In our case, it had spread to his tongue and throat, so one of the prescriptions was a medicated rinse.)
